I am not extremely familiar with 1:1 iPad or laptops with students and see myself riding the fence on benefits vs. consequences. In my high school, the most we had was the option for 1:1 PalmPilots. That said, most of us decided to not accept the PalmPilots offered us because we were afraid that 1) We wouldn’t use them, and 2) We would lose them or break them. I, for one, wasn’t going to take my chances and refused to use a PalmPilot. I have no idea what it would be like with much more expensive Apple products. Sure it’s great to give students, who may not be familiar with expensive tools of technology, the opportunity to expand that technological horizon, but I would be petrified to break such an expensive piece of equipment.
